Our Story

Imagine rebuilding your life from a bin bag.

This is the reality for many people in crisis.

Well-meaning donations are often passed on unwashed, in poor condition and in the bin bags they came in.

Oftentimes they are not suited to the recipient’s size, style and religious or cultural needs – further eroding their self-esteem at a critical time in their lives.

What’s lacking in these cases is not thought or care – simply the time, space and resources to do anything different.

That’s where

comes in.

ALICAS gifts capsule clothing parcels to people in clothing crisis – thoughtfully tailored to their size, style and religious or cultural needs.

Each capsule wardrobe is designed to support the recipient to retain their dignity, identity and confidence through some of life’s most challenging circumstances – domestic abuse, human trafficking, poverty, homelessness, forced marriage and seeking refuge.

“A lady named Ali once told me that a good coat and pair of shoes were key to rebuilding her life. They allowed her to take her children to school and go to job interviews with pride. Years later, after seeing the poor quality of donations in refuge myself, I made it my mission to do better and banish the bin bag. ALICAS (or Ali’s Coats and Shoes) was born.”

How it works

ALICAS is a social venture, comprising:

  • A charitable arm (The ALICAS Foundation) which manages donations and gifting
  • A commercial business (ALICAS LOVE LTD t/a ALICAS) which generates revenue

Both entities work together to ensure their social impact remains sustainable.

ALICAS operates a ‘purchase-with-purpose’ business model and has two revenue streams:

  • Garment repurposing service (diverting surplus retail stock from waste)
  • Sustainable wardrobe staples (for retail and wholesale)

We donate 25% of each sale, and the garments it repurposes, to The ALICAS Foundation – which provides bespoke clothing parcels for people in clothing crisis.

The pilot

Shortly before the Covid-19 pandemic, we conducted a highly successful pilot – onboarding 14 referral agencies, diverting 2,000 garments from waste and distributing over 100 capsule clothing parcels.

The demand we experienced and the feedback we received validated the demand for our service and provided essential insights to refine our offering, including the products we supply and the way they are delivered. Changes we’ve implemented include:

  • Delivering parcels in a holdall instead of a box, making transportation easier for those in temporary accommodation and/or those who don’t have a suitcase
  • Prioritising wardrobe staples over less practical garments like occasion wear
  • Making our service available to people of all ages and genders

With many crises affecting people around the world, and the ongoing environmental burden caused by the fashion industry, the need for ALICAS remains immense.

Together, let’s help rebuild lives one capsule wardrobe at a time.
